Life Coaching
An article by Lucy Seifert Life Coach London
Where would you like to be - in life and at work?
Would you like some help in getting there?
Life coaching will enable to you to bridge that gap & take bite-sized steps towards great goals
What is coaching?
Many people have good ideas, but only some make them happen and coaching offers a dynamic to enable clients to translate their goals and dreams into action and reality. After all, "You cannot plough a field by turning it over in your mind" (Anon)
Coaching is also the art of improving performance and, as a communication trainer with 20 years experience, I also offer clients 1-2-1 personalised training & the opportunity to develop skills that relate to their goals, such as assertiveness training, confidence coaching, CV & interview skills, public speaking and presenting, and time and stress management. Coach and client work in partnership in a climate of confidentiality, honesty, trust and support. A client may bring one pressing issue, such as a relationship difficulty at home or at work, or may want to look more broadly and longer term at their personal and professional goals and well-being.
The International Coach Federation, which offers a code of ethics in the pursuit of excellence in coaching, believes the client is the expert in their life & work, and is creative and resourceful. Thus the coach enables the client to identify & define their goals, embark on a journey of self-discovery, generate ideas and solutions and take responsibility for their decisions and actions.
Life Coaching using the GROW Model
A life coach may work intuitively or with a structured approach or combine the two. I like to combine the two and my preferred model of Coaching is GROW or TGROW and I think it helpful for the client to understand the process of the model which in turn gives them greater ownership in the coaching session.
What does TGROW stand for?
T is for topic, the broad issue the client brings,
G is for goal, the specific matter the client wants to work on today;
R is for Reality Check such as where is the client now, what have they done so far, what are their resources, what is stopping them?;
O is for Options, an explosion of ideas & at this stage quantity rather than quality is important; finally
W is for Ways Forward, and the creation of an Action Plan that feels both encouraging and manageable for the client.
Life Coaching Tools
Life Coaches use many coaching tools to enable the client to talk, discuss, see their situations from different perspectives, learn & develop, problem solve, make decisions and attain their goals and dreams. I like to use a mix of popular tools such as the Wheel of Life, the GAP Analysis and SMART goals with my own practical & creative exercises to encourage self-discovery, reflection and creativity, using discussion, questioning, feedback and continual encouragement to move the client forward towards their goals.
