Since the start of the pandemic, whilst certain industries and levels of employment have suffered, there has been a leap in the number of start-ups.
According to data from Companies House, nearly half a million had been registered between March 2020 and the end of the year.
Perhaps you are among those who due to:
– job insecurity, being furloughed or facing unemployment
or alternatively
– wanting to have a fresh start, to do something you’ve always wanted to do and to be your own boss,
have decided this is the time to step out from employment to being a freelancer or starting up your own small business?
There are plenty of challenges when the buck starts and stops with you, when you are constantly having to motivate yourself, set your own deadlines, handle all communication, admin and social media – at least to start with. It means being realistic, not expecting to win the lottery, metaphorically speaking, in the first few months. Sometimes when we look at others’ success, we might think: ‘Wish I were in their shoes’ but that success has most likely come with excellent planning and organisation, clear goals and priorities and lots and lots of hard graft.
Do you have:
– a clear SMART goal for what you want to achieve and when?
– a timeline for each stage you want to reach?
– the skills & qualifications and relevant experience?
– a support system and ideally someone who is rooting for and looking out for you?
– the determination and tenacity to see it through?
I recently had an article published on building your confidence and resilience to go it alone. The article covers diverse challenges and areas of importance for success, including:
- Expectations and realism, yours and your clients/customers
- Confidence from qualifications and continuing professional development
