Ten tips for writing a successful CV:
- Familiarise yourself with the organisation’s vision, mission and values, and reflect them authentically in your CV
- Personal profile: write a strong personal profile, no more than 5 lines. Include your cumulative experience, highlight your expertise and proudly state any special awards and recognition
- Key Skills & Achievements: be mindful of the required competencies of the role
- Career to date: start with your current role and work backwards, showing the progression of your role
- Highlight your achievements, and provide evidence
- Professional Qualifications: record your academic and professional successes and CPD
- Values: ensure the values you express are aligned with the organisation’s values
- Easy on the eye: ensure your CV is easy to read, with a strong, clear font like Arial.
- Keep it concise: two pages of relevant material are sufficient unless you’ve reached a very high level
- Check your CV carefully for accuracy; errors may be seen as a reflection upon a lack of attention to detail and raise concerns as to the accuracy of your work if appointed.
Get that job!
A great CV will help you to get your foot in the door for that first stage interview. During our sessions, you will gain an insight into what recruiters are looking for. We’ll match your talents honestly to their needs, to get your CV on to the’ YES’ pile.
How does CV coaching work?
I ask questions to find out about who you are as a person & professionally to ensure that your competencies & talents, your ethics & individual style leap off the page & mark you out as unique.
I work with you and we develop your CV together, rather than writing it for you from scratch. After all, it’s important your CV speaks in your voice. We want to ensure that when you go for interview, you are in harmony with your CV, that the way you present yourself verbally is consistent with the written style of your CV.
Together we work through the whole process to identify your skills, talents and motivations and help you gain the edge over other candidates.
Coaching is usually online (via Zoom), enabling us to share the screen to work on your CV.
You may then wish to move on to other issues such as interview skills and giving a presentation.
Examples of CV Writing Disasters!
- Poor spelling and grammar
- Poor inconsistent, formatting that makes it hard to read, and therefore hard to follow
- Lack of headings and bullet points
- Cluttered pages: disorganised & excessive information
- Too long; too much for busy recruiters to absorb, or even read
- Focus on what you do rather than what you’ve achieved
- Lack of evidence of the skills you claim for yourself
- A generic CV that takes no account of the competencies required in the current role
- A casual tone and personal, unprofessional email address
- A combination of the above that create a negative first impression
Testimonials
“I have recommended several of my clients to Lucy Seifert for one-to-one coaching. They are candidates seeking high level posts in the voluntary and public sectors. Lucy challenged them to identify and confront what held them back. She helped them do justice to their talents in writing and at interview. All these clients went on to successfully apply for new posts in their chosen fields.”
